A Brief Overview of Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is actually a combination of diseases, the result of this combination is that the body cannot regulate the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood.

Glucose gives you the energy you need to perform your daily activities: walking, running, exercising riding your bike etc...

• The food you eat is digested and glucose is produced by the liver.
   
• The blood glucose level is regulated by hormones, including insulin, which produced by the pancreas. The pancreas also secretes enzymes that help digest food.
   
• Insulin helps glucose to move from the blood into liver, muscle, and fat cells, where it is used as body-fuel.
   
• Diabetes sufferers either do not produce enough insulin (type 1 diabetes) or cannot use their insulin properly (type 2 diabetes).  Some unfortunates suffer both forms of diabates.
   

In diabetes, glucose is effectively trapped in the blood and cannot cross into cells. This damages the cells and also harms organs and tissues exposed to the resultant high glucose levels.
