COMPLICATIONS OF DIABETES
Both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes will ultimately lead to increased blood sugar levels,
this condition is called hyperglycemia.
Over a period:-

Hyperglycemia can damage the retina of the eye, as well as the kidneys, nerves, and
blood vessels.
- Damage to the retina from diabetes (diabetic retinopathy) is a main cause of blindness
in older people.
- Damage to the kidneys from diabetes (diabetic nephropathy) is a leading cause of
kidney failure.
- Nerve Damage caused by diabetes (diabetic neuropathy) is a frequent cause of foot
wounds and foot ulcers, which frequently require foot or leg amputations.
- Damage to the autonomic nervous system can lead to stomach paralysis, chronic diarrhea,
and an inability to properly control heart rate or blood pressure during exercise
or movement.
- Diabetes can accelerate , the formation of fatty plaques inside the arteries (atherosclerosis),
which can in turn lead to blockages or clots (thrombosis). Such changes can eventually
lead to heart attack, stroke, and decreased circulation in the arms and legs.

Diabetes also predisposes sufferers to increased
blood pressure and increased cholesterol
and
triglyceride levels. These conditions can increase
the risk of heart disease,
kidney disease, and other
blood vessel complications.
In the short term, diabetes can contribute to several shorter-term medical conditions:
- A large number of infections are associated with diabetes, and those infections are
often more serious in someone with diabetes because the body's usual resistance to
infections is reduced. Some infections may also inhibit glucose control, which also
delays recovery.
- Hypoglycemia, (low blood sugar), can occur in most people suffering diabetes. It
can result from taking too much medication or insulin, missing a meal, unusual exercise,
too much alcohol, or a reaction to medications taken for other conditions.
For all
these reasons, it is important to recognize hypoglycemia and to be prepared to treat
it. Headache, dizziness, lack of concentration, hand tremors, and sweating are all
symptoms of hypoglycemia. You may faint or have a seizure if your blood sugar levels
fall too low.
- Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious condition in which hyperglycemia becomes uncontrolled, usually
due to a total lack of insulin or a large deficiency of insulin. Over time this creates
a buildup of acidic waste products in the blood (called ketones).
High levels of
ketones can be extremely harmful.
Most typically this happens to type 1 diabetics
who do not have good blood glucose control. Diabetic ketoacidosis can be brought
on by infection, stress, trauma, missed medication, or medical emergencies like a
heart attack or a stroke.
- Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic nonketotic syndrome is a very serious condition.
The blood
sugar level gets extremely high and the body tries to rid itself of the excess blood
sugar by excreting it in the urine. This in turn increases the amount of urine being
produced, often leading to dehydration.
This dehydration can be severe enough to cause
seizures, coma, and death.
This syndrome most often occurs in type 2 diabetics who
are not adequately controlling their blood sugar levels, through stress, injury,
stroke, or are taking medications like steroids.
